I coach in the majors division which is mainly 11 and 12 yr olds with a few good 10s thrown in. I umpire all the way up thru high school though.

Nice My kids are soccer players for the most part -- I've always loved playing and coaching myself. Trying to talk my 14 y/o into refing classes, but so far I cant get her to budge lol.

It's very hard to get the younger ones into umping or reffing. For the most past it's hard for them to handle the jeers and criticism coming from parents and the stands. In our league we have a "junior umpire" group and they are protected. Any parent, coach, player or fan that even yells or questions them at any time is ejected from the game and has to appear in front of the conduct board to explain why they felt the need to berate a child. It works in that it keeps them safe and they know the league backs them so they keep coming out and trying and eventually they get really good. Maybe something to try to out into your soccer league?

Im currently doing "Soccer Reffing" I would REALLY RECOMEND getting into it. It is super fun, a great experience and some good pay... or at least here in Canada... I love doing it and it really helps your communication and focus.. Lastly... Its alot of fun..
